Studies based on radiocarbon dating suggest that Kennewick Man died around 8,, calibrated years before present. Bering land bridge. Due to the great age and the unclear origin of the Kennewick Man, many legal and scientific battles have surrounded his cultural affiliation. The major debate about the rightful ownership of the skeleton was carried out between representatives of Native American tribes, who requested to repatriate the remains according to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act NAGPRA , and members of the scientific community demanding an open access to the skeleton and further scientific examination.
In July , two college students were at the riverbank of the Columbia River to watch the hydroplane race in Kennewick, Washington.

Sign up for our email newsletter for the latest science news. The Colville were among five tribes who were involved in a lawsuit to obtain Kennewick Man’s remains. But for the Pacific Northwest tribes demanding a proper burial for Kennewick Man, the results corroborate what they already knew from their oral traditions, and may renew their call for repatriation. Subsequent radiocarbon dating efforts revealed the remains were from the Holocene Era some 8, to 9, years ago — an incredibly rare and significant find.
The aged Kennewick Man was nearly a complete skeleton, and scientists knew that these bones would be key to solving a longstanding mystery as to how, when and by whom North America was first settled. However, there was a catch. The United States Army Corps of Engineers maintained the land where Kennewick Man was found; furthermore, that particular stretch of the Columbia also fell within the borders of sacred homeland claimed by five Pacific Northwest Native American tribes. Thinking that they might have discovered the body of a recent murder victim, the two young men notified the county sheriff. Soon the Kennewick police were on the scene and discovered more bones. They called the county coroner and a local anthropologist, James Chatters, to help investigate. It soon became clear that the remains had been in the earth for some time—the bones showed deep discoloration and were encrusted with soil.
Because the skull showed features common to Europeans, a long narrow face, receding cheek bones, a high chin and a square jaw, Chatters began to think that they had discovered the skeleton of an early pioneer. Because the bones were found on federal land, Chatters applied for and received a permit to excavate the site. He returned to the river bank several times and recovered more bones, laying them out in his basement for further study. The pelvis demonstrated that the skeleton belonged to a man.
The length of the leg bones showed that he had been 5 feet 9 or 10 inches tall. Teeth and bone formation indicated that he died when he was between 40 and 55 years old.

Fern T. Littlecalf, jailed on three counts of second-degree kidnapping, had what police describe as an extensive network of fake names and aliases, all working together for one goal: to kidnap a 6-month-old child from his mother. Unknowingly a pawn in her plan was a man from Kennewick who elected to drive the unsuspecting mother and her three kids, thinking he was reuniting a family at a local hospital following a tragic vehicle collision.
But he would meet Littlecalf, according to police. According to police, the Tri-Cities woman believed she was in a dating relationship with Kanoa, though she had never met him in person. The driver, along with the mother and her three children, left Kennewick at about p. He dropped the mother off at Providence Holy Family Hospital, police say, but the woman was told Kanoa was not a patient there.
So he picked her back up about an hour and a half later with Littlecalf in the car and took them all to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. The woman told police she believed Littlecalf was related to Kanoa based on a previous run-in she had had with the year-old in October. She told police there was a period of several hours during that time where Littlecalf left with her 6-month-old, but the child was returned when the mother called Crime Check.
On Thursday, upon arriving at Sacred Heart, Littlecalf and the woman went inside with the 6-month-old while the man sat with the two older children in his car. According to police, the mother went to the fourth floor while Littlecalf and the small child stayed in the waiting room. But they were gone. When Littlecalf returned to the vehicle, the man told police he drove her and the three children to an apartment complex in the area of S.

Their conclusion: The Ancient One is closely related to at least one of the five tribes that originally fought to rebury him on spiritual grounds. Boyd says that the Colville people, who provided two dozen DNA samples for comparison with Kennewick Man, are now discussing whether to reclaim the skeleton under U.
The U. Army Corps of Engineers, which currently has legal custody of Kennewick Man, is also studying whether to return the nearly complete skeleton—which was found eroding from the shore of the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington, in —to the tribes. Outside scientists praise the work, published online today in Nature , in part because it also offers clues to the prehistory of North America.
For years there was no way to scientifically resolve the question, in part because tribes were able to claim many of the bones and rebury them, in accordance with their cultural practices, without genetic or other studies. But in recent years, two studies of ancient remains suggested that modern Native Americans could trace their ancestry to the original inhabitants of the Americas, who probably arrived in North America about 15, years ago.
These remains included the 12,year-old Anzick child from Montana , whose nuclear genome was sequenced last year, and the partial sequence of mitochondrial DNA from the 13,year-old bones of a teenage girl from Mexico. Like Kennewick Man, the girl had a long, high skull, suggesting that skull shape did not correspond with ancestry. When Kennewick Man was first made available to researchers in , several attempts were made to sequence his DNA, without success. Other experts agree.
The team, which also gained access to DNA from the Colville tribe, found that the Ancient One is especially close genetically to that tribe and other northern groups such as the Ojibwa and Algonquin. They found that Kennewick Man does indeed resemble the Ainu and Polynesians—but that it still fell well within the wide range of variation of Native American skulls.

Area Indian tribes sought to rebury the man they called the Ancient One and revered as an ancestor. The federal government agreed, but eight anthropologists and archaeologists sued for the right to study the skeleton, widely known as Kennewick Man. The case dragged on for years, attended by controversies over the handling of the bones, the burial of the discovery site, and statements by some plaintiffs, amplified and distorted in popular accounts, that appeared to suggest Kennewick Man was “Caucasian” and that Europeans may have reached America before Indians did.
Scientific studies, ironically conducted by the government in an effort to support its decision to turn the remains over to the Indians rather than allow studies by the plaintiffs, showed that Kennewick Man was not like Europeans, Indians, or any modern peoples. In early an appeals court affirmed a prior decision that the plaintiff scientists would be allowed to study Kennewick Man. Students Will Thomas and Dave Deacy found a skull while wading through the shallow water on their way to view hydroplane races.
Benton County coroner Floyd Johnson, responsible for investigating human remains, thought the skull appeared unusually old. He called in his friend James Chatters, a self-employed anthropologist who had assisted him in prior investigations. Searching the riverbank and shallow water that evening and over the next few days Chatters and others located more than bones and bone fragments that made up a nearly-complete skeleton. The initial discovery received only minimal attention in the press.

Kennewick Man is the name generally given to the skeletal remains of a prehistoric Paleoamerican man found on a bank of the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington , United States, on July 28, Radiocarbon tests on bone have shown it to date from 8. In June , it was announced that Kennewick Man had most genetic similarity among living peoples to Native Americans, including those in the Columbia River region where the skeleton was found.
The discovery led to considerable controversy for more than a decade. The law was designed to return human remains and cultural objects which had long been unlawfully obtained or taken from them. In this case, the archaeologists who studied the bones, James Chatters and Douglas Owsley , the latter with the Smithsonian Institution , both asserted that the bones were only distantly related to today’s Native Americans.
The US Army Corps of Engineers, which oversaw the land where the remains were found, initially agreed with the requests of the tribes. Before the transfer could be made, Owsley, along with seven other anthropologists including Smithsonian colleague Dennis Stanford , filed a lawsuit asserting the scientific right to study the skeleton. In February , the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that a direct cultural link between any of the Native American tribes and Kennewick Man could not be proved because of the age of the remains.
Chatters, the discoverer of the bones, eight years after originally assessing the skull as looking “caucasoid”, changed his conclusions after finding similar skull shapes among confirmed ancestors of Native Americans. The discovery of Kennewick Man was accidental. Will Thomas and David Deacy, two spectators at the annual hydroplane races on July 28, by floating tubes down the bank of the Columbia river and found the skull in a reservoir on the Columbia River at Columbia Park in Kennewick, Washington.
The coroner delivered the cranium for study to the archaeologist James Chatters.
